On March 5th, 2021, Shuguang Xiao, the secretary in Hongqiping village, Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County, one of the advanced individuals fighting poverty throughout the country as well as an alumnus of WTU, came to WTU to make a report on Chinese poverty alleviation. More than 130 international students from 21 countries who study in WTU, University of Geosciences, Hubei University of Economics attended the meeting online or in person.
Secretary Xiao shared with international students the stories about relieving poverty with the lead of Communist Party and help from social caring people, together with stories about poverty eradication among people during the three years when he took root in the poor mountainous areas. He showed the huge changes of Hongqiping Village in recent years. Meanwhile, he introduced and looked forward to Chinese rural revitalization strategy. Students were aware of Chinese poverty alleviation policy and supports more comprehensively through communions.
At the event site, those present watched the movie, Curved Ghat, adapted from Secretary Xiao’s real story, which reflected the deeds of poverty alleviation cadres under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. It explicated the determination and perseverance of the Communist Party of China and Chinese government to win the battle against poverty. The international students were deeply touched by personal charisma of secretary Xiao, the selflessness and fearlessness of poverty alleviation cadres, and the responsibility and capacity of Chinese government.
