The resultsof the 2018 American Mathematical Contest(MCM/ICM) have been announced recently. The 54 studentsin our school made up 18 teams to take part in the competitionand they won 2 first prizes,8 second prizes and 8 third prizes in total. This has been the best result since our school started to join the competition. So there is no doubt that it will be a lavish gift for the coming 60th anniversary of WTU.
MCM,hostedby COMAP,is the only global international mathematical contest in modeling and the most significant mathematical contest in modeling worldwide , which is the originator of various mathematical contest in modeling nowadays .MCM and CIM are the abbreviations of Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling , started in 1985 and 2000,whichemphasizesthe rationality of searching questions , teamwork and communication and results . 20932 teams from a number of countries and regions worldwide participate in the competition this year.
The competition, lasting from 6 a.m. on February 6 ,2018 to 9 a.m. on February 13, 2018 in Beijing time, was held simultaneouslythroughglobal network. The competition had been strongly supported by the school. The vice-President HuangYunping and many other leaders ofstudents affair department, such asTeaching Affairs Department, theLogistics GroupandInstitute of meterwere on the spot many times to visit our students and guide some relevant work.
Our school team is organized and guided by Shi Xianjun,Xu Chao and Cai Wenting, three teachersfrom School ofMathematicsand Computing Institute.Everyone,no matter advisors or participants, devoted their winter holiday to preparing for the contest. In order to ensure that every team's thesis will be smoothly sent to American Organizing Committee, the advisors made lots of systematic practices, posted messages related to the contest timely and accurately and dealt with emergencies in the contest. With one and another systematic and strict practice, students havepromotedtheirability of solving problemsandwriting a thesisand acquired abundant experience.
During thecompetition, threeundergraduatesconstitute agroup .In thecontinuousninety-nine hours, they need to establish the mathematical model and solve it and verify it,and finallywrite a thesis on specified questions. They were demanded to hand in a twenty-page-aroundpaper ,whichshould be standard and fluentto the competition organizing committee. From the questions to the answers, the whole part of the contestshould be inEnglish, whichrequiredbothknowledge andabilityin mathematical modeling ,as well as the ability in writing English article of science and technology. Thus it is a big challenge for students.
The groupof teachers led by Shi Xianjun worked hard day and night together with the students. At last, theparticipants lived up to expectations and got excellent results. Throughthis competition, the students felt the perfect combination of math and life. Meanwhile, they developed their abilities of analyzing and solving problemsthrough practice, gained an understanding ofthe power ofteam workthrough theircollaborationand broadened their internationalhorizonas well. What’s more, their outstanding performances won honor for our university.

In recent years, the school attaches greatimportance to the organization and the implementation of all kinds of competition, including the mathematical contest in modeling of American college students ,the National Mathematical Contest in modeling and so on.The number of the team participating in the contest grows rapidly. Almost students fromall the facultiesof science and engineeringparticipate inthem.
