Over the years, WTU has adhered to the discipline construction philosophy of “one priority and several highlights—prioritizing textile and apparel with the coordinated development of multiple disciplines”, and implemented the “three-year action plan to enhance the comprehensiveness of disciplines” with “serving the textile industry, improving quality, and pursuing excellence” as the guide. Continuously optimizing the discipline layout with science and engineering as the core and humanities, arts, and economics and management as the support, WTU guides the faculty to explore basic scientific issues from industrials applications, conduct in-depth basic research, serve and even lead the development of textile and related industries. According to latest ESI (Essential Science Indicators Database) Global Rankings released in November 2020, WTU’s materials science and chemistry has made it to the global top 1%.

It is reported that the potential value of engineering disciplines of WTU has exceeded 100% and another breakthrough in discipline construction may be achieved on the next ESI Global Rankings due in January 2021. At present, ESI has become one of the most important evaluation indicators for evaluating the international academic level and influence of universities, academic institutions and countries across the world.
