Thirty WTU students received Certificates of Achievement in the 2020 Mathematical Contest in Modeling & Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling, securing one First Award, four Second Awards and five Third Awards under the guidance of Professor Shi Xianjun, Wang Yanbo and Xu Zhao. The award-winners come from the School of Mathematics & Computer Sciences (the organizer), the School of Mechanical Engineering and & Automation, the School of Accounting, the School of Economics, the School of Environmental Engineering and the School of Electronic & Electrical Engineering.
Sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Application, the MCM/ICM are the most influential international competitions of its kind that ask teams of three undergraduates to spend a weekend modeling an applied mathematics problem, providing great opportunities for students to realize the importance of good teamwork and focus on original problem-solving skills in a real-world environment. Problems come from research areas of applied mathematics related to many fields – economics, management, environmental sciences, resources, ecology, medical sciences and security are a few examples.
